This historical novel is set in Australia after the gold rushes, and was first published as a serial in the Sydney Mail. The story is about three children, left in the guardianship of their Uncle, and the treatment which they and their mother received at his hands. The author has included many realistic descriptions of colonial life. The rounding up of brumbies is a very vivid description of one of the boys in a dramatic ride down a rocky hillside after one of the wild horses: this scene was written over 30 years before - and may have been a model for - the same scene in "The Man From Snowy River". (Limited facsimile edition of 200 copies. Originally published, W.C. Penfold, Sydney,1919.) The History of the Australian 6th Light Horse Regiment during World War 1 from December 1914 to August 1919. Raised in Sydney in September 1914, it became part of the 2nd Light Horse Brigade. Sailing from Sydney in December 1914, the regiment disembarked in Egypt in February 1915. The light horse was unsuitable for initial operations at Gallipoli, but they were later deployed without their horses to reinforce the infantry. Plus many battles during the next four years in the Middle East: Battle of Romani, advance into Palestine, the action at Beersheba, and raids into the Jordan Valley. An inspiring story of managing a cattle station in the Gulf country, far north Queensland. Written and illustrated by the author. The author came from England to Australia in 1951, and wanting to work with horses, worked as a governess on a Longreach sheep station, then went to a Camooweal cattle property where she met her future husband. In 1958 they went to Forestvale, an 1100 square mile cattle property in the Gulf Country. They stayed until 1970. The company transferred Jack to Lyndhurst, where they stayed 14 years.
