94. Freeman, Anthony (editor) (2001). The Emergence of Consciousness [Journal of Consciousness Studies Special Issue]. Thorverton, UK: Imprint Academic. 166 pp. Paperback octavo, very good plus condition. How does the conscious mind relate to the physical body? Two common views from the past offered the stark choice between dualism in which mind and body were quite separate, and physicalism in which the mind was in fact nothing but the physical brain. Both these views are now widely rejected. Emergence theory offers a compromise: the mind emerges from the physical body but the whole person, mind and body, is more than the sum of the physical parts. Philosopher Robert Van Gulick gives a clear and masterly overview and comparison of the current emergent and reductive approaches. The editor's own chapter argues for the radical proposal that even God is an emergent property. ISBN: 0907845185. Our Book No: 16008. $20 AUD.

141. Humphrey, Nicholas; al., et (2000). How to Solve the Mind-Body Problem [Journal of Consciousness Studies Special Issue]. Thorverton, UK: Imprint Academic. 112 pp. Paperback octavo, very good plus condition. The mind is the brain. Each mental state - each hope, fear, thought - can be identified with a particular physical state of the brain, without remainder. So argues Nicholas Humphrey in this highly readable yet scholarly essay. He offers strong support for his identity theory from evolution. His controversial claim is discussed and challenged in commentaries by authors such as Andy Clark (Being There, 1997), Daniel Dennett (Consciousness Explained, 1991; Darwin's Dangerous Idea, 1995) and Ralph Ellis (Questioning Consciousness, 1995). Humphrey rounds off the book with a response to his critics. An excellent short introduction to the mind-body problem and the study of consciousness. Nicholas Humphrey is author of the widely-read "A History of the Mind" (1992) and other books including "Consciousness Regained" and "Soul-Searching". Heavy (1.2 Kg), and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. The spare-time production by Thomas Bewick of his celebrated natural histories was supported by the vigorous activity of a general engraving business involving Bewick, his partner Ralph Beilby and numerous apprentices. The workshop's surviving records are unique in their diversity and quantity, revealing a vast range of work, from banknotes and inscriptions on silver, to the making of type punches and bottle moulds. These records have been used in the study of engraved silver, pottery transfers and the preparatory studies for Bewick's wood engravings. But this biographical dictionary of the several hundred bookplates engraved on copper and wood - executed and printed in the workshop over a period of 89 years - is the most extensive and thorough in its use of primary sources. Lively enthusiasm and careful scholarship have combined to produce a valuable and truly pioneering work on a subject hitherto clouded by speculation and optimistic attribution. Very fully illustrated, with over 300 examples reproduced, and its wealth of biographical information on the owners of the bookplates represents an important contribution to the social history of the north of England. The View from Within: First-Person Approaches to the Study of Consciousness (Reprint ed) [Journal of Consciousness Studies Special Issue]. Thorverton, UK: Imprint Academic. 314 pp. Paperback octavo, very good plus condition. The study of conscious experience per se has not kept pace with the dramatic advances in PET, fMRI and other brain-scanning technologies. If anything, the standard approaches to examining the view from within involve little more than cataloguing its readily accessible components. Thus the study of lived subjective experience is still at the level of Aristotelian science, leading to a widespread scepticism over the possibility of a truly scientific study of conscious experience. These essays by philosophers, cognitive scientists and religious scholars draw on a wide range of approaches - from phenomenology to meditation - to examine the possibility of a disciplined approach to the study of subjective states, with a focus is on the practical issues involved.
